"Will Dance For Food" – Sold on SuperRare

Artwork reflecting on hunger and neglect, inspired by my experience working at a hostel in Guatemala amidst discarded food

‘Will Dance For Food’ is a deeply personal 1/1 piece that explores themes of hunger, inequality, and the disconnect between privilege and need. The title references an ironic plea for sustenance, underscoring the desperation that comes from being in a position where basic needs are unmet.

The piece is rooted in my own experience working at a hostel in Guatemala, where I earned only $2 per hour. Guests often left behind delicious food, and I witnessed the inequality firsthand, with two individuals in charge of distributing the leftovers—yet they never shared with me. Despite being in dire need of food, my attempts to use humor to ask for help were met with indifference. The experience left a lasting impact on me, as I saw the disparity between those with abundance and those suffering in silence.

Inspired by Shigeru Mizuki’s words, ‘I feel the most sorry for the ones who starved to death. I’ll never get over that feeling,’ this artwork serves as a powerful commentary on the human condition, the lack of empathy, and the real meaning of hunger. The piece reflects the harsh reality of starvation and the difference between casual complaints of hunger and the true experience of deprivation.

While this piece was inspired by a specific event, it touches on universal themes of inequality, societal neglect, and the commodification of human experience. It challenges viewers to think critically about how we perceive and address hunger in our world.
